Are You Asking too Much?

Have you ever wondered about that? Perhaps it was a board member, a rogue donor, a member of your staff, or your president or CEO who broached the subject.

Consider this: 4.7%.

That’s how many lapsed donors said they stopped giving because they were asked too often (Insights Report).

In this study of 98,000 donors, “asking too often,” came in dead last out of eleven choices.

When asked directly why they actually stopped, the top three reasons had nothing to do with asking too much. The responses were all about disappearing:

  • Never acknowledged - 19.4%

  • Not asked again - 15.8%

  • No follow up - 13.9%

Let that sink in for a minute. Nearly half of lapsed donors left because of silence, not noise or being asked too much.

The next time you’re told, “Maybe you’re asking too much or too often,” ask and answer one question: Is that what our donors are telling us?
